Communication Goes to Four Majors

SUNY has approved a curriculum restructuring which will double the choice of communication majors. Plattsburgh currently offers only two majors in the fields of communication; Mass Communication and Speech Communication. Once the new academic curriculum is in place students will have a choice of four distinct majors. Having four majors will allow students to focus on more specialized areas of interest. The majors which will soon be offered are:

* Communication Studies
* Business and Organization Communication Studies
* Video Production / Broadcast Journalism
* Audio / Multimedia Production.

The curriculum restructuring could be the first step in the college's longterm plans. SUNY Plattsburgh's intention, with administrative approval and funding, is to combine the Mass Communication Department and the Journalism Department to create a new Center for Communication and Journalism. The departmental restructuring would result in the first and only Center of Communications and Journalism in the SUNY system.

This proposed Center of Communications and Journalism would have a major positive impact on SUNY Plattsburgh and all involved studies. The hopes are that a new Center would attract national recognition for quality and innovative communication programs. Plattsburgh State Television would continue to play a major in a new Center of Communications and Journalism.

College Allocates Funding For New Equipment

As part of a major capital campaign, SUNY Plattsburgh has granted the Communications Department $660,000 for television equipment upgrades. Provisions of the funding state that the allocated money be spent over the next year and a half. The equipment upgrades will supposedly be implemented according to a three-stage plan:
  1. Field Equipment
  2. Editing Equipment
  3. State Three: Studio Equipment
Speculation is that the new equipment will be DV tape format to replace the antiquated 3/4-inch U-matic SP equipment that has served PSTV for 20 years.
